UPI transaction volumes surge 13,000 times in ten years, says Finance Ministry

The Finance Ministry released figures that illustrate the staggering rise of UPI activity. Over the past decade, the annual number of transactions has multiplied by 13,000, jumping from 1.78 crore in FY 2016‑17 to 24,162 crore in FY 2025‑26. Transaction value followed a similar trajectory, moving from Rs 0.07 lakh crore to Rs 314 lakh crore – an increase of about 4,000 times. International Monetary Fund (IMF) data places UPI as the world’s largest real‑time payment system by volume, accounting for roughly 49 percent of global real‑time payment transactions in 2025. These numbers highlight UPI’s role as a critical infrastructure for both domestic and cross‑border digital commerce.
