Upcoming GST Process Changes Target Taxpayer Relief and Faster Economy

New Delhi – Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told reporters on Monday that the next chapter of GST reform will focus on simplifying the procedural side of the tax, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambition of a "Developed India". The announcement, posted on the LinkedIn platform, underlined that the reforms are meant to ease compliance for taxpayers while giving the Indian economy a stronger momentum.

The earlier reform, effective from 22 September 2025, dealt with changes in tax rates. The forthcoming phase will concentrate on improving the processes that businesses follow, with a formal paper slated to be presented to the GST Council shortly.

According to Sitharaman, the key goals are to provide households with financial relief, grant businesses higher certainty about their tax obligations, and make it easier for taxpayers to fulfil their responsibilities. The ministry’s data indicates that the value of taxable supplies grew by 25.8% between October 2025 and July 2026 compared with the previous year.

During the April‑September 2026 period, total GST collection rose 11.6% to ₹12.46 lakh crore. Each month from June through September recorded double‑digit annual growth, resulting in an approximate 15% increase in collections over those four months.

Net GST collections – after accounting for refunds – rose 10.4% in the first half of the fiscal year. Consumer‑oriented (B2C) sales climbed 26.7% after the reforms, and GST registrations stood at about 1.71 crore by the end of August, a 15% rise over the prior year.

Refunds totalling around ₹1.80 lakh crore were disbursed in the April‑September window, underscoring the need for predictable refunds for businesses. State SGST receipts, which also include their share of IGST settlements, grew roughly 16% during the same period.

On 7 October the GST Council will deliberate on a set of proposals prepared in coordination with state governments, aimed at cutting down the time and cost associated with compliance. A streamlined, more predictable GST system is expected to help businesses across the board – including small enterprises in tier‑2 and tier‑3 cities – expand and bolster India’s growth narrative.
