UP Schools Promote Green Awareness via BRICS Sustainability Week

In a significant move toward ecological education, Uttar Pradesh’s state government has rolled out a comprehensive sustainability program in its public schools. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the BRICS Sustainable Lifestyle Week is currently underway, spanning over 132,000 council schools and reaching approximately 142 million students between November 1 and 7.

The initiative is built on the Mission LiFE architecture, aiming to cultivate environmental responsibility and social accountability among the youth. Each day features a distinct theme to guide classroom discussions and activities. The program has already progressed through modules on healthy living, power conservation, and water preservation, followed by a session on sustainable food practices on November 4.

Upcoming sessions will tackle pressing ecological issues. November 5 will focus on phasing out single-use plastics, while November 6 addresses the disposal and reduction of electronic waste. The campaign wraps up on November 7 with a broad focus on waste minimization and management. These structured lessons are intended to teach students how to utilize resources wisely and protect natural ecosystems.

Implementation relies heavily on existing school Eco Clubs, which facilitate student involvement and track daily progress. The education department has provided all necessary informational and educational materials through an official online portal. Participating institutions are utilizing a mix of pledge drives, creative arts, hands-on workshops, and awareness campaigns to keep the momentum strong.

Speaking on the program’s objectives, Education Minister Sandeep Singh stressed that quality schooling must go hand in hand with character building for environmental stewardship. He explained that instilling habits like energy efficiency, water saving, and responsible waste handling at a young age will create a durable foundation for long-term ecological preservation.

Monika Rani, Director General of School Education, underscored the campaign’s practical approach. She noted that integrating green behaviors into daily routines requires consistent effort from teachers and students alike. By encouraging learners to adopt and propagate these eco-friendly practices at home and in their neighborhoods, the state aims to build a culture of sustainability that extends far beyond school walls.
