The Untold Reason Behind Gandhi’s Absence from the First Independence Day

Many textbooks mention the flag‑raising at the Red Fort, yet they often omit why the Father of the Nation did not stand on the podium. Gandhi’s philosophy placed the welfare of the most vulnerable above symbolic gestures. On 15 August 1947, he remained in Kolkata’s Muslim‑dominant Haideri Manzil area, working alongside former chief minister H.S. Suhrawardy to calm tensions.
