Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar Temple Hosts Spectacular Baba Mahakal Ash Aarti

Ujjain, 30 August – On the auspicious day of Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha Dwitiya, the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple conducted a magnificent ash aarti for Baba Mahakal. The ritual began before 9:40 a.m. and drew a sizeable congregation of devotees.

The priest, after seeking permission from the deity, opened the inner sanctum with the reverberating sounds of drums and conches. The temple echoed with the chant "Jai Shri Mahakal" as worshippers caught a fleeting view of the deity.

The idol was then anointed with Panchamrit – a sacred mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey, and fruit juices. The first bell rang, signalling the offering of holy water, followed by a camphor aarti. Baba Mahakal was crowned, and the ash aarti commenced with vigorous drumming, cymbals, and the blowing of conches.

Divine decorations included bhang, a trident, a three‑dot tilak, and fragrant flowers. The chief priest completed the mahā‑aarti, and the assembled devotees, many of whom had been waiting since the night before, observed the concluding rites. Attire regulations required men to wear dhoti‑sola and women to don sarees throughout the ceremony.

Per tradition, the Great Nirvani Akhada presents the ash offering, which is believed to cause Baba Mahakal to manifest in a visible, tangible form for his followers.
