UCC Bill Expected in West Bengal Assembly by August 2024

West Bengal is moving swiftly toward the introduction of a Uniform Civil Code. After the nine‑member committee chaired by Justice Ranjana Desai completes its review, the state government will draft the final bill. Chief Minister Somen Mitra has confirmed that the legislation will be presented in the state legislature in August, making West Bengal the fourth Indian state—after Gujarat, Uttarakhand and Assam—to adopt a uniform civil law.

The chief minister also clarified that tribal communities, including Adivasis, Gorkhas and other recognized indigenous groups, will be exempt from the new code, following the exemption model used by Uttarakhand and Gujarat.
