UCC Bill Draft to Reach Cabinet; Final Version Expected by August

The most critical item on the docket is the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill. A draft of the legislation is slated to be presented to the state cabinet for approval during the same meeting.

The draft will have been prepared by a newly constituted committee chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, which is required to submit its recommendations within four weeks.

Upon cabinet endorsement, the final bill will be drafted based on those recommendations and is planned to be introduced in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in August 2026.
