TVK Seeks Formal Alliance with Congress, VCK, MDMK, IUML Ahead of Wednesday Session

Chennai, September 9 – The Tamilaga Vetrikazhagam (TVK) is set to host a pivotal meeting on Wednesday at its Panayur headquarters, with Chief Minister M.K. Vijay presiding. The session, slated for 4 p.m., will bring together representatives from the Indian National Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) to discuss a formal alliance.

Senior TVK officials and ministers have already extended invitations to these parties, aiming to transition from ad‑hoc support to a structured coalition. The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have also been invited, but both are expected to stay out of the core alliance, preferring to support the government from the outside.

The coalition talks trace back to a July 1 meeting in a Kovalam hotel, where a broad outline for cooperation was drafted. While the left parties attended that initial dialogue, they limited their role to external backing.

Wednesday’s gathering is anticipated to finalize the alliance’s nomenclature, leadership, and coordination mechanisms, including the appointment of a chief coordinator and deputy coordinators. The consensus points toward Chief Minister Vijay being confirmed as the alliance’s leader.

The outcome will consolidate a shared political platform for the TVK administration, bringing Congress, VCK, MDMK and IUML into a formal partnership while allowing CPI and CPI(M) to retain their independent organizational identities.
