Travel Advisory Issued as Southwest Trough Brings Downpours to Western Ghats

The Meteorological Department has released a travel advisory for the Western Ghats region of Tamil Nadu, citing a southwest trough that is expected to deliver heavy showers and strong winds to the hill districts of Nilgiri and Coimbatore over the next three days.

The low‑pressure trough, extending from central India to the Mannar Bay, will push moist air into the ghats, resulting in sudden downpours and gusty conditions. Roadways winding through the hills are considered vulnerable, and officials have warned of possible landslides, blocked routes and damage to trees and crops.

Travelers heading to popular hill stations and locals commuting on these routes should exercise extreme caution, use appropriate lighting, reduce speed, and keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. Visibility may deteriorate rapidly, and road surfaces could become treacherously slippery.

Adjacent districts such as Tirupattur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Irud, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Trichy, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Kallakurichi are also likely to experience scattered rain with intermittent gusts on Monday and Tuesday.

In Chennai, the weather will remain predominantly cloudy with occasional light drizzles after dusk. No heavy rain is forecast for the metropolitan area.

Meanwhile, the interior parts of the state will continue to feel the lingering heat, with maximum temperatures projected to be up to four degrees Celsius above the seasonal norm. Authorities recommend regular hydration, limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and staying updated with real‑time weather alerts.
