After days of punishing heat, Delhi-NCR witnessed dramatic weather changes on Thursday evening when powerful winds and rainfall arrived without warning. Temperatures that had hovered above 40 degrees Celsius dropped sharply once the rain began, offering residents their first real respite in weeks. The India Meteorological Department had earlier issued alerts for gusty winds and thunderstorms, and those warnings proved accurate as several parts of the capital recorded wind speeds up to 80 km/h. Areas from Rohini in the north to Kalkaji in the south, as well as satellite cities like Noida and Gurugram, reported moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. The sudden weather shift was triggered by a western disturbance interacting with cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere. As a result, air quality improved noticeably and the oppressive humidity gave way to cooler breezes. Looking ahead, the IMD expects daytime highs to remain between 34 and 37 degrees Celsius over the weekend, with overnight lows dipping to 22-25 degrees. While the cooler spell is pleasant, officials have warned about possible disruptions from strong winds, including fallen branches and power outages. Citizens have been advised to stay indoors during active storms and avoid waterlogged streets. Meteorologists say these developments signal the gradual advance of the southwest monsoon. The coming days are expected to feature repeated spells of rain and thunder across Delhi-NCR, keeping temperatures comfortably below seasonal averages.
