Thunchan Smrithi Becomes Cultural Hub in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram – The inauguration of Thunchan Smrithi on Friday marked the birth of a new cultural centre within Kerala’s Lok Bhavan. More than 10,000 books, previously stored in separate corners of the building, are now housed under one roof near the Secretariat’s main gate.

The library’s holdings feature over 4,000 Malayalam volumes and nearly 6,000 English titles, supplemented by works in other Indian languages. The shelves showcase works on literature, history, philosophy, science and Kerala’s unique cultural narratives.

Governor Ramesh Babu presented the library as a platform for knowledge exchange, urging citizens to make use of the collection rather than letting it sit idle. He highlighted that the initiative aligns with Kerala’s tradition of valuing education and literary pursuits.

Cultural stalwarts in attendance praised the decision to name the library after Thunchath Ezhuthachan, whose contributions laid the foundations of Malayalam language and literature. Director Adur Gopalakrishnan described the naming as a fitting tribute to the scholar’s legacy.

Poet V. Madhusoodanan Nair hoped the library would serve as a research anchor for students and scholars exploring Kerala’s history and arts. Author George Onakkur noted that the governor’s support for reading and regional language promotion has been instrumental in realising the project.

The newly organised space now offers a systematic catalog, climate‑controlled conditions and a welcoming environment, turning what was once a disjointed book stash into a vibrant public knowledge hub.
