Three-Hour Rescue Ends Water Tank Standoff in Jharkhand's Giridih
A three-hour rescue operation brought an end to a dramatic standoff in Jharkhand's Giridih district, where a man had climbed a water tank about 150 feet high along with his four-year-old son. The episode was triggered by a family land dispute.
The incident occurred in Ajidih, within the jurisdiction of Mufassil police station. The man has been identified as Mahadev Tiwari. Residents said the situation quickly turned into a major gathering as word spread.
On Thursday morning, around 10 am, the man was seen with the child at the upper part of the water tank. Seeing a young boy at such a height, onlookers became anxious, and a crowd began to assemble. Efforts to persuade him to descend initially failed.
Once the police were informed, personnel from Mufassil police station rushed to the site. Recognising the gravity of the situation, Sub-Inspector Shailendra Kumar climbed the tank to speak with the man. Extended talks did not result in his coming down.
The authorities then escalated efforts. Circle Officer Jitendra Prasad arrived and spoke to the man over the phone, seeking to persuade him to come down safely with the child. The administration gave an assurance that the family dispute would be heard after both were brought to safety.
After nearly three hours, the man and the child were brought down without injury. Relief was visible among the people gathered at the spot.
Later, under a tree near the water tank, a meeting was held with the man's relatives and local residents to address the land dispute. Initial information indicates that the family land dispute and a morning quarrel with his wife led to the act. Local residents also claimed he had been drinking, although this has not been officially confirmed.
