Thousands Gather for Mahakal’s Divine Ash Aarti on Ashadh Dwitiya
Ujjain’s revered Mahakaleshwar Temple celebrated the second lunar day of Ashadh with a luminous Ash Aarti that saw thousands of believers assemble before the shrine. Following a ceremonial directive from Veerabhadra, the temple’s massive doors were thrown open amid the thunderous beats of drums and nagadas.
The deity was bathed in Panchamrit, a sacred concoction of dairy and fruit juices, and then adorned with celestial symbols including a moon ornament, bel leaf garlands, a Vaishnav tilak, Tripund ash marks, and pure ash crafted from Kapila cow dung mixed with therapeutic herbs. A priest then led the main Aarti, during which worshippers could behold the deity’s divine form.
Participants adhered to a dress code mandating dhoti‑sola for men and sarees for women. To manage the extensive crowd, police forces were stationed throughout the temple complex, maintaining order while devotees, some arriving the previous evening, awaited their turn.
