Quick Thinking Saves Lives as Thane Container Catches Fire
Quick action by a driver and a prompt response from emergency services averted a potentially dangerous situation on Ghodbunder Road in Thane on Saturday afternoon. A container cabin caught fire near Patlipada bridge, close to Mumbai, and was completely burnt before firefighters brought the flames under control.
The Disaster Management Department was alerted at 1:07 pm about a fire in a container opposite Horizon Hospital in Patlipada. The incident occurred in the lane moving from Ghodbunder towards Thane.
The Tata container was on its way from Vasai to Pune and was carrying no cargo, officials said. Its driver, Shrikrishna Tadas, told investigators that he spotted smoke coming from the cabin during the drive. Recognising the seriousness of the warning sign, he parked the vehicle safely at the roadside and moved away from it at once, a step that kept him out of harm's way.
On receiving the information, personnel from Kasarvadavli police, traffic police, the Disaster Management Department and the fire brigade reached the site. The fire department deployed a fire engine and a rescue vehicle as relief and rescue operations got under way.
The firefighting operation lasted around 40 minutes. At 1:45 pm, the fire was fully brought under control, although the cabin had already been completely destroyed by then. The incident led to a temporary heavy traffic jam on Ghodbunder Road. Police and traffic officials subsequently worked to normalise vehicular movement.
The cause of the fire is being examined as part of a preliminary investigation. Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the incident, and vehicle movement in the area gradually returned to normal.
