Territorial Army’s Legacy: From 1948 Act to Modern Campaigns

From the first Territorial Army Week held between November 8‑15, 1952 to present‑day operations, the force has evolved into a vital component of India’s defence architecture. Initially created to foster a ‘citizen army’, it has grown into a structured organization with two distinct units: a departmental wing comprising public‑sector employees, railways staff and ex‑servicemen, and a non‑departmental wing made up of private‑sector professionals. The force is commanded by a three‑star General, usually a Lieutenant General on deputation from the regular army, reporting to the Ministry of Defence’s Department of Military Affairs.
