Tax Evasion Claims Surface as Godavari River Turns Toxic

The Godavari River in Rajmahendravaram is facing a severe environmental crisis, with officials pointing to Andhra Paper Limited as a major culprit. Apart from the vast quantities of untreated effluent, the company is accused of deliberately avoiding tax payments for over a decade.

Records show that Andhra Paper owes ₹21.34 crore in taxes to both the Kateru Gram Panchayat and the municipal corporation, a liability that has accumulated since 2016. The firm reportedly sidestepped tax obligations by filing delayed returns and exploiting legal loopholes, thereby escaping fiscal responsibility.

Environmental measurements paint a grim picture. Samples from the plant’s discharge point recorded a biochemical oxygen demand of 36 mg per litre, phosphate levels at 5.3 mg per litre, and sulfide concentrations of 3.4 mg per litre – all surpassing the standards set by the Pollution Control Board. The high BOD indicates a rapid consumption of oxygen in the water, threatening fish and other aquatic life.

Authorities have issued multiple notices demanding remedial action. The latest show‑cause notice gives the company a final opportunity to comply before facing stringent penalties, including possible closure, hefty fines, and revocation of its operating licence.
