Tarun Tejpal’s Ten-Year Prison Term Sparks Political Row Over Party Responses

The conviction of former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal has ignited a fierce debate in the Indian Parliament. While the BJP has foregrounded the judgment, the Congress has been conspicuously silent. Sudhanshu Trivedi reminded lawmakers of a 2004 letter from Sonia Gandhi to then‑Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, urging non‑hostile treatment of Tejpal and his financiers. He also cited an award conferred on Tejpal in 2010 by then Law Minister Veerappa Moily, contrasting it with the current silence of the opposition. Trivedi questioned whether the Congress ever offered legal assistance to Tejpal, noting that the party historically used controversial personalities to target nationalist governments.
