Despite High Accident Count, Tamil Nadu’s Death Rate Remains Below Peer States

Even though more than 71,000 road crashes were logged in 2025, the state’s mortality ratio stayed comparatively modest. Deaths rose gradually from 17,884 in 2022 to 18,347 in 2023, 18,449 in 2024 and reached 18,505 in 2025. Experts attribute the relatively lower fatality percentage to prompt emergency response and better availability of medical facilities, but they warn that speeding—especially on highways—continues to be a major challenge.
