Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Faces Renewed Scrutiny Over Election Win

Chennai, July 21 – The Madras High Court has taken up a petition questioning the legitimacy of Chief Minister Vijay’s victory in the Perambur legislative assembly election and has ordered a new notice to be served.

The TVK leader secured the seat with 1,20,365 votes, defeating DMK’s R.T. Sekar, who earned 66,650 votes, resulting in a 53,715‑vote lead.

Sebastian Sekar, aided by voters Dinesh and Lakshmi Narsimhan, filed separate petitions alleging that Vijay’s nomination papers contained contradictory statements and that his disclosures about assets and pending criminal matters were incomplete.

During the hearing, counsel Richardson Wilson highlighted the failure to notify the Chief Minister and the election officer. Justice V. Lakshminarayanan responded by mandating the issuance of fresh notices to the Chief Minister, the election official and other respondents, and scheduled the next hearing after a two‑week recess.

In parallel, the state has introduced a transparency campaign, requiring anti‑corruption information boards to be displayed in all government offices, municipal bodies, public sector undertakings and state‑owned firms, underscoring that both giving and receiving bribes constitute criminal offenses.
