Tamil Nadu Accuses Karnataka of Withholding 26.954 TMCFs of Cauvery Water

Tamil Nadu has lodged a formal accusation against Karnataka, demanding that the latter release an additional 26.954 thousand million cubic feet (TMCF) of Cauvery water. The plea was filed before a Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath, with Justice Sandeep Mehta also presiding.

Counsel C.S. Vaidhyanathan stated that the state had complied with the Cauvery Water Management Authority’s (CWM) earlier directive and received water on Monday morning. Nonetheless, he argued that Karnataka has not been ordered to compensate for the deficit in the water share that Tamil Nadu should have received.

The lawyer drew attention to the fact that Karnataka’s reservoirs contain about 78 TMC of water, yet the proportion earmarked for Tamil Nadu remains undelivered. He urged the court to consider the latest water release figures and to schedule the matter for a hearing on the next Monday, which the court later fixed for August 31.
