From Swadeshi Roots to Modern Promotion: Modi Urges Handloom Support

Prime Minister Narendra Modi connected the historic Swadeshi movement of August 7, 1905, with today’s call to promote Indian handloom. In a video message posted on X, he appealed to citizens to create short videos featuring their favourite handloom pieces, encouraging the use of GRWM format to attract younger audiences.

Modi explained that the Swadeshi movement was a collective effort to reject foreign goods and foster indigenous production. He suggested that the same collective spirit can now be directed toward supporting handloom artisans, who keep traditional weaving techniques alive across the country.

The Prime Minister likened the enthusiasm surrounding recent Friendship Day celebrations to the energy needed for National Handloom Day. He urged the public to celebrate by buying handloom products, filming their experiences, and sharing them widely.

Such digital advocacy, Modi said, will give Indian handloom a global platform, improve the livelihoods of weaver families, and add fresh momentum to the self‑reliant India agenda.
