Suspicious Death of Advocate in Hazaribagh Sparks Protest
The suspicious death of Anushka Chakraborty, an advocate associated with the Jharkhand High Court, has triggered widespread outrage in Hazaribagh. She was found hanging on Thursday inside Flat No. 304 of Gupta Complex in Bengali Para, which lies within the Hazaribagh Sadar police station limits.
Her parents' side has termed the death a planned killing and has leveled grave charges against her husband. Demanding his immediate arrest and a high-level inquiry, relatives, lawyers and local people have carried out a strong protest.
According to the police, the exact cause of death will be determined only after the viscera report and the final postmortem report are received. Acting on the family's request, police carried out a repeat postmortem on Friday after completing the necessary legal formalities. The maternal family has made it clear that the last rites will not be performed until the accused husband is arrested and the case is fully exposed.
Relatives have cautioned that if police fail to act swiftly and decisively, they will begin an indefinite dharna in front of the police station. Preliminary investigation has shown that the husband himself informed Dial 100 about the incident. He told the police that he was in Palamu and was returning, yet he has not appeared before the authorities since the incident took place.
Mukesh Kumar Rajak, TOP in-charge of Bada Bazar, said that raids are being carried out continuously to trace the absconding husband and that he will soon be taken into custody.
On Friday, Ramgarh MLA Mamta Devi also arrived at the postmortem house of Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hospital. She endorsed the demand for a high-level probe, full videography of the postmortem process for transparency, and the prompt arrest of the wanted husband.
Tensions escalated at the spot as relatives, lawyers and Congress workers voiced their fury, resulting in a tense exchange with police and administrative officials. The MLA shared that, according to the family, Anushka had spoken to her mother on the phone shortly before the incident and mentioned a serious dispute with her husband.
The family also states that Anushka had previously disclosed instances of harassment by her husband and ongoing domestic conflict. Police have said that every possible aspect of the case is being examined in depth and that strict legal action will follow based on the evidence collected.
