Suspension of MLA raises questions over Punjab's education reforms
A senior member of the AAP Punjab unit, MLA Sukhveer Singh Masarkhana, was suspended after publicly questioning the state government's education policies. The move sparked criticism from opposition leader Pratap Singh Bajwa, who said the disciplinary action revealed a deeper problem.
Masarkhana had spoken out about the shortage of teachers in government schools within his constituency, noting that his own children attend a school suffering from understaffing. He alleged that he raised these concerns with party leaders, but received no substantive response.
Bajwa contended that the suspension, framed as a crackdown on "anti‑party" activity, attempts to silence legitimate critique of the so‑called "Sikhya Kranti" promised by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. He argued that addressing teacher shortages and school management issues is essential for any real educational transformation.
The opposition urged the administration to investigate the complaints, engage with affected families, and prioritize staffing and infrastructure over punitive measures. Bajwa concluded that genuine reform demands accountability, not the suppression of dissenting voices within the party.
