Supreme Court Annuls Over 25,000 Appointments After Finding Recruitment Fraud

On April 3, 2025, the Supreme Court delivered a landmark verdict declaring the recruitment processes of the West Bengal Central School Service Commission to be riddled with fraud. The judgment invalidated more than 25,000 teacher and staff appointments that had been made through manipulated OMR scores, rank‑jumping and outright illegal hiring.

The court’s order emphasized the systemic failure of the commission to uphold merit‑based selection and highlighted the extensive collusion between officials, brokers and candidates. Following the ruling, the affected appointments were cancelled, and the commission has been directed to conduct a fresh, transparent selection exercise.
