Supreme Court‑appointed SIT leader Anurag remembered for 1984 riots probe

Anurag, the Deputy General Police Inspector of Tripura, gained nationwide recognition when the Supreme Court directed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to revisit the 1984 riots. As the head of that SIT, Anurag oversaw the collection of evidence, interrogation of witnesses, and presentation of charges that later resulted in convictions.

His tenure was noted for its independence; even after completing his service at the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Court allowed him to continue overseeing the case. Minister Asim Arun of Uttar Pradesh, who attended Anurag’s funeral, praised this rare continuity, saying it marked a high point of trust in the officer’s capabilities.

The minister stressed that Anurag’s commitment to justice set a benchmark for law‑enforcement officials across India. He urged authorities to investigate the mysterious circumstances of Anurag’s death, which occurred on July 20, and to provide answers to the grieving family and colleagues.
