Supreme Court Orders Review of FIRs; Delhi Police Focuses on Property Damage Cases
In September, the Supreme Court cancelled FIRs filed across Delhi, Bihar, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Assam concerning student protests that took place between July 20 and 25. The court instructed that no further legal action be taken in similar cases nationwide.
In response, Delhi Police's Crime Branch has redirected its investigative efforts toward incidents of vandalism, attacks on police personnel, and damage to public assets, including police vehicles, that occurred during the CJP rally on July 20.
The protest at Jantar Mantar saw an estimated 30,000 participants demanding accountability for paper‑leak allegations and exam irregularities. A clash with law‑enforcement agencies ensued, leading to the use of force by police and subsequent public criticism. The police have now ordered a thorough review of their intelligence gathering mechanisms to better anticipate crowd dynamics and potential threats.
