Supreme Court Order Prompts UP Cabinet to Restrict Madrasah Courses to Class 12
Following a Supreme Court ruling, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet is set to approve a proposal that will limit madrasas to teaching only up to the 12th standard. The decision comes after the court instructed the state Madarsa Board to link its Kamil (UG) and Fazil (PG) degrees with recognized universities.
Minister Danish Azad Ansari explained that the board has already been directed to affiliate its degree programmes with external universities, ensuring academic credibility. He added that the move aligns with the government's long‑term goal of uplifting the Muslim community through quality education.
BJP MLA Rajesh Chaudhary supported the upcoming cabinet resolution, stating that any educational framework not anchored in constitutional values should be phased out. He emphasized that the new policy will prevent the issuance of unaccredited degrees and protect students from potential misuse.
The proposed amendment, once passed, will confine madrasas to providing education up to higher secondary level, thereby ending the practice of awarding graduation‑equivalent certificates without proper university validation.
