Supreme Court Limits Metro Closure Amid Planned Delhi Demonstration

In a three‑judge bench headed by Chief Justice Suryakant, the Supreme Court ruled that Delhi’s metro and other rail services should not be fully halted for the protest slated on 10 October. The court emphasized the principle of proportionality, asking the government to adopt precautionary steps that do not unduly disrupt public travel.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the bench that the authorities would review the restrictions imposed around the Janpath‑Karyavahi crossing, where mobile internet will be suspended for 24 hours. The court ordered that any decision to limit train movements be communicated widely to passengers in advance.

The protest, organized by the Cochroach Janata Party, aims to demand accountability from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. While the internet blackout proceeds as ordered, the Supreme Court’s guidance ensures that metro operations continue under controlled conditions.
