Supreme Court urged to intervene in SIR controversy, opposition says
Opposition parties intensified their legal strategy on October 12, urging the Supreme Court to step into the dispute over the Special Intensive Review of the voter list. The Samajwadi Party and Congress accused the Election Commission of shielding itself from scrutiny by refusing to meet with senior opposition leaders.
Amik Jamei, the Samajwadi Party’s spokesperson, claimed that the Chief Justice of India is overwhelmed and cannot allocate time for a meeting with the India Alliance. He framed this as evidence of an institutional bias that favours the ruling government.
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chauhan reiterated his earlier demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and called for the SIR to be scrapped entirely. He said the Supreme Court must intervene to protect democratic processes.
The opposition’s appeal comes amid a wave of student protests across campuses, which they say highlights public concern over electoral fairness. The parties urged the judiciary to act swiftly before the next phase of elections begins.
