Sule Criticises Handling of Sonam Wangchuk Protest, Calls for Democratic Sensitivity

Supriya Sule raised alarm over the police response to activist Sonam Wangchuk's demonstration in Delhi, describing the crackdown as "deeply regrettable."

She told reporters that she had spoken with the party’s spokesperson, Anish Gawande, who was present at the scene. The MP stressed that the protest was conducted in a wholly peaceful manner, and the forceful removal of participants was neither justified nor in keeping with constitutional values.

Sule argued that a thriving democracy must protect the right of citizens to voice dissent without fear of violence. She urged the government to adopt a more empathetic and democratic stance toward lawful protests, emphasizing that the current approach could set a dangerous precedent.

The MP also reiterated that the Constitution guarantees every individual the freedom to assemble and express opinions peacefully, and any deviation from this principle should be scrutinised.

Her comments reflect growing concerns among opposition leaders about the administration’s handling of civil unrest and its impact on democratic freedoms.
