Sudhvi Kumar Sonu’s Untimely Death Sends Shockwaves Through Jharkhand Politics

Late Saturday night in Giridih, Sudhvi Kumar Sonu – senior JMM figure and Jharkhand cabinet minister – suffered a fatal heart attack. Family members say the minister felt a sharp pain in his chest while preparing for sleep and was rushed to M.S. Hospital. Despite emergency interventions, he was declared dead.

Elected from Giridih Sadar in 2019, Sonu retained his seat in the 2024 state elections and was handed critical departments such as tourism, arts‑culture, sports, youth affairs, urban development, housing, and higher technical education. He also served as the JMM’s central secretary, acting as a key liaison between the party and the chief minister.

His abrupt passing has triggered mourning across Jharkhand’s political spectrum. The JMM released a statement calling his loss “irrevocable” for the party, the government, and the people of the state, recalling his role in mediating student protests and advocating for development projects.
