How a Stolen Scooter Fueled a Series of Street Snatchings Across Delhi

A stolen scooter became the key tool in a string of street snatching crimes that plagued Delhi’s central and southern areas. According to the police, the vehicle was taken by Vikas Gurung, a 25‑year‑old Nepali national, after he spotted a drunk individual asleep beside a scooter with the ignition key still engaged.

Gurung used the scooter to circle densely populated zones, targeting pedestrians—primarily women carrying mobile phones, handbags or other valuables. He would swiftly approach from behind or the side, snatch the items, and disappear through a network of connecting streets.

The investigation, launched after an FIR at Sarojini Nagar police station, involved reviewing footage from more than one hundred CCTV cameras. By stitching the recordings together, detectives built a visual trail that covered roughly 30 kilometres, confirming the suspect’s route and leading to his capture.

Recovered items include the stolen scooter, a gold pendant, a pair of silver bangles and two mobile phones. Police have linked the scooter’s use to five separate theft‑related complaints across various precincts, strengthening the case against the accused.
