Srinagar Hosts Third Kashmir Marathon With 2,000+ Athletes
Srinagar, October 25: Srinagar witnessed a spirited start to the third Kashmir Marathon on Sunday. The event, organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department, aims to establish Kashmir as a prominent global destination for sports and tourism.
The race offered two options for runners: a Full Marathon of 42 kilometres and a Half Marathon of 21 kilometres. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah flagged off the event at a ceremony that began at 6:30 AM, greeting athletes from India and overseas before the start.
More than 2,000 athletes took part this year, which reflects the increasing enthusiasm surrounding the Kashmir Marathon. The event has grown into a significant sporting platform that brings together Kashmir's natural beauty, its hospitality and its potential as a hub for sports tourism.
International runners appreciated the generous hospitality, the lively welcome and the excellent arrangements made for them. They called the marathon a delightful and uplifting experience in the valley.
To honour participants' achievements, a special award distribution function has been planned. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha is expected to attend the ceremony.
Rising participation and growing international attention show the increasing significance of the Kashmir Marathon. The event has also strengthened Jammu and Kashmir's standing as a major destination for sports, tourism and international sporting events.
One woman athlete said she had come to the Kashmir Marathon after completing a 100-kilometre flag run recently. She said she is a gold medallist and that her message is for everyone to attend such events and give up drugs.
A Kenyan athlete, running the 42-kilometre Full Marathon, said this was his second opportunity to take part in the marathon in Kashmir. He said he enjoys his time in Jammu and Kashmir.
