Spiti valley to be declared natural farming zone, new college considered
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu told a public gathering in Kaza that the Spiti valley will be officially recognized as a natural farming region. The move is part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable agriculture and boost the local economy.
The administration is also evaluating the possibility of setting up a college in Kaza to provide higher‑education opportunities for youth in the remote district. Additional medical personnel, including gynecologists, will be appointed to strengthen the valley's healthcare system.
Sukhu highlighted that a Rs 500 crore development package has been allocated for Spiti over the next few years. This includes a Rs 350 crore power transmission line expected to be completed within three years, aiming to double household incomes in the region.
The CM recalled his first visit to the area on April 15, 2023, when residents raised concerns over electricity shortages. He noted that recent ground‑level efforts are beginning to yield results, and the state is focusing on improving living standards across its 42 percent desert‑like highland zones.
