Special Poxos Court Hands Down Life Sentence Within 72 Hours

Gandhinagar, September 10 – A landmark judgment from a special Poxos court in Kalol has underscored Gujarat’s commitment to fast‑track justice. The court sentenced a 42‑year‑old perpetrator to life imprisonment for the abduction and sexual exploitation of a 15‑year‑old girl, delivering the verdict a mere 72 hours after the charge‑sheet was filed. This case is part of a larger trend: from 2022 through August 2026, Gujarat courts have delivered 1,785 decisions under the Poxos Act, imposing life sentences on 908 accused and death sentences on 16. Police investigations have become markedly quicker, with charge‑sheets filed within 45 days for the majority of cases and many completed in as little as 1 to 15 days. The number of judgments rose sharply from 194 in 2022 to 499 in 2025, and 346 decisions have already been recorded in 2026, including 241 life terms. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi praised the police’s scientific approach and the judiciary’s firm stance, calling the rapid ruling a testament to Gujarat’s zero‑tolerance policy.
