Special Investigation Team Probes Messi Visit While MD Detained Over Liquor Case

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Kerala has intensified its inquiry into alleged financial irregularities surrounding the proposed visit of football icon Lionel Messi and the Argentina national team. The probe coincided with the arrest of Reporter TV Managing Director Antony Augustine, who was detained on charges of possessing illicit liquor at his ancestral home in Vazhavatta, Wayanad.

The SIT, chaired by Additional Director General of Police P. Vijayan, was formed following a report from the sports secretary and was approved by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan. Its mandate includes scrutinising the funding and logistical arrangements for the high‑profile sporting event, as well as any associated transactions.

Law enforcement agencies carried out simultaneous raids on Reporter TV’s corporate office in Kochi and on properties linked to Augustine and his brothers. The agencies reported that they possessed all necessary legal authorisations before entering the premises, adhering to procedural norms.

While the media outlet faced unrelated accusations of liquor possession, the minister clarified that the investigation’s focus remains strictly on the financial aspects of the Messi tour. The court rejected Augustine’s bail plea, extending his judicial custody for 14 days, and the government reiterated its commitment to maintaining an independent press.

The situation highlights the confluence of sports, media, and law enforcement in Kerala, with the SIT’s findings expected to influence the planning of the upcoming international football event.
