The India Meteorological Department (IMD) released a series of warnings today as a low‑pressure trough, extending from South Gujarat to Central Kerala, intensifies the southwest monsoon over Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The system is expected to generate rain showers across a wide stretch of the state for the next few days.

In the Nilgiris district, the combination of steep slopes and saturated soil makes the area especially susceptible to landslides. IMD officials have therefore issued a specific advisory urging residents to avoid steep ravines, keep emergency contacts ready, and heed any local evacuation notices.

Adjacent districts that share the Western Ghats’ watershed are also forecast to receive moderate rain with gusty winds on Thursday. The department cautions against potential tree falls, sudden streams, and minor flooding in low‑lying zones.

Overall, the monsoon remains vigorous in South India, with the trough lifting moisture levels and accelerating cloud development. While the mountainous districts may face heavier downpours, the rest of Tamil Nadu is likely to see scattered showers rather than prolonged, intense rain.

In Chennai, a blanket of clouds will linger throughout the day, allowing for occasional light rain. The overcast conditions will bring temperatures a few degrees lower than normal, though the humidity index will stay high.

Alongside the land‑based warnings, IMD has issued a marine weather advisory for fishermen navigating the Andaman Sea. Between July 10 and July 12, wind speeds could reach 55 km/h, prompting seafarers to monitor updates closely and plan routes with safety as a priority.
