In a bid to quell ongoing unrest, Kolkata Police have nabbed two more individuals connected to the explosive clashes at Golpark, pushing the arrest count to 19. The Sunday night melee featured gunfire, homemade bombs, and brutal assaults, yet key suspect Sona Pappu evades capture.
The flashpoint was a picnic at Panchantala near Golpark under Rabindra Sarobar station limits. Rival groups – one led by local businessman Bapi Halder and the other allegedly Sona Pappu’s crew – turned a festive gathering into a battlefield around 8:30 PM. Rioters, numbering over a hundred, unleashed mayhem with stones, blades, bullets, and blasts.
Vandalism scarred police cars and bikes alike, with evidence of spent shells and explosive remnants littering the streets. Community members point fingers at Sona Pappu’s outfit for instigating trouble to seize control of the area.
Law enforcement swung into action post-chaos, detaining 10 on the spot. Subsequent operations yielded four arrests Monday, three Tuesday midday, and the latest duo – locals Rakesh Banik and Rajiv Das aka Sonu – late Tuesday. Three cases now dot the station’s books, covering the assault on police assets.
Adding intrigue, Sona Pappu surfaced online via Facebook live, vehemently denying any role in the violence. With the neighborhood on edge, authorities vow continued sweeps to dismantle the networks fueling such disturbances and ensure public safety.
