South Indian Weather Alert: Persistent Rainfall Over Tamil Nadu

The Chennai Regional Weather Centre has released an alert highlighting persistent rainfall and strong gusts across a swath of Tamil Nadu. The bulletin identifies seven districts—Tanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi—as the focal points for heavy rain during the day.

A broader area that includes Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur and Perambalur is slated for lighter but widespread showers. Additional districts—Sivaganga, Erode, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari—are also under a light rain advisory.

Forecast models suggest the weather system will linger into the following day, repeating the heavy rain scenario for the seven core districts and extending light rains to neighboring regions. The prolonged moisture over the Cauvery delta is expected to significantly influence the upcoming rice season, delivering much‑needed water but also raising concerns of potential flooding in low‑lying farms.

Travelers are cautioned that the combination of rain and wind may disrupt normal traffic flow, particularly along coastal highways. Emergency services are advised to stay prepared for possible flash‑flood incidents.

The underlying cause of this extended wet spell is the atmospheric circulation currently active over the southeastern Arabian Sea and the Kerala coast, which continues to steer moisture-laden winds toward Tamil Nadu.
