BJP Questions Sonia Gandhi’s Memoir as Political, She Insists It’s Personal
The Bharatiya Janata Party has publicly challenged the nature of Sonia Gandhi’s upcoming memoir, labeling it as a political instrument. Gandhi responded on X, reiterating that the book titled *Belonging: A Journey of Love* is a private account of her family’s experiences.
The 544‑page manuscript is slated for worldwide release on 10 November, with HarperCollins India publishing the Indian edition after a recent resolution of a disagreement with Penguin Random House India.
In her first X post since re‑engaging with the platform, Gandhi honored her late husband Rajiv Gandhi, calling him a man of great charm and gentle temperament. She had earlier used Instagram to hint at the memoir’s focus on love, duty, separation and the search for identity.
“Nothing in this book is intended as a political declaration,” Gandhi wrote. “It is an honest portrayal of the people I love, their aspirations, their hardships and their humanity.”
The BJP’s critique follows a recent interview Sonia Gandhi gave to *The Hindu*, where she accused the Modi government of undermining democratic institutions and exploiting religion for electoral gain. The interview also saw her defending the constitutional basis of the 1975 Emergency, prompting BJP members to accuse her of justifying Indira Gandhi’s controversial actions.
Historically, Gandhi has limited personal social‑media activity, favoring the official Congress X account for public communication. Her recent posts have therefore become a key element of the narrative surrounding the memoir’s launch.
