Sola Sewage Plant Mishap Kills Two Workers in Gujarat
Two workers lost their lives and two others were hospitalised after a mishap at a sewage treatment plant in Sola, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Four workers had fallen into a pit during their work, and the suspected presence of dangerous gases complicated the rescue effort.
The victims who died have been identified as 28-year-old welding worker Abhishek and 40-year-old supervisor Manohar Adhave. The two workers who survived are 39-year-old project manager Rupesh Anand Baviskar and 26-year-old Nilesh Lodhi.
Hospital records indicate that both survivors are receiving treatment. The same records list Abhishek and Adhave as dead.
Early reports say Abhishek had entered the pumping unit of the sewage treatment plant to perform welding. After finishing his work, he slipped on the ladder while climbing up and fell into the sewage water.
Baviskar, Adhave and Lodhi tried to pull him out. Gases from the sewage, however, made the rescue difficult, and the three are believed to have fainted during the effort.
An emergency call was received by the Ahmedabad Fire Department through the 112 helpline, reporting that four workers had collapsed inside the plant. Firefighters arrived with safety equipment and began rescue operations.
Fire officer Jadeja said that all four workers were located and the search had been completed, while efforts to retrieve the fourth worker were still ongoing.
Authorities said all four were taken to Sola Civil Hospital. Abhishek and Adhave were brought in dead, while Baviskar and Lodhi were admitted for care.
Hospital records confirm that the workers' fall into the sewage treatment plant led to the incident.
Relatives of the deceased and fellow workers said that some laborers had built temporary huts within the plant compound and were living there at the time.
Sola Police have started an investigation into the incident. The probe will examine the reasons behind the deaths, the availability of safety gear at the site, and the emergency rescue arrangements.
