Following the July 7 and 8 filings, police detained six individuals accused of running the smuggling ring. Three were taken into custody in Mumbai while the remaining three were arrested in Kolkata. The accused are charged under sections of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and the Indian Penal Code, 2023 that deal with criminal conspiracy.
Investigators allege that the suspects sourced the protected animals from various parts of India and planned to sell them on the black market, violating strict national protections.
