Siddharthnagar Assembly Seats: Key Takeaways from 2022 Polls
The 2022 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh left a lasting mark on Siddharthnagar district, where five constituencies witnessed intense rivalry between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party. The BJP and its allies won three seats, while the SP captured two. Here is a closer look at how the five seats played out.
Bansi: Jai Pratap Singh, a veteran BJP leader, defended the seat with 84,596 votes. SP's Naveen finished with 64,256 votes, and BSP's Radheshyam came third with 22,071. Singh's eighth assembly win marked a significant milestone, following his first victory as an independent in 1989. He has lost once during his career, but he continues to hold considerable influence in the region.
Dumariyaganj: This seat delivered one of the district's tightest results. SP's Syeda Khatoon edged out BJP's Raghvendra Pratap Singh by 771 votes, collecting 85,098 votes to his 84,327. BSP's Ashok Kumar Tiwari secured 20,416 votes. The near-even contest drew significant attention, and the victory gave the SP a valuable political edge in the district. The constituency lies close to the Nepal border.
Itwa: Mata Prasad Pandey of the SP, a former assembly speaker, defeated BJP's Satish Chandra Dwivedi. Pandey had earlier won three consecutive contests between 2002 and 2012. After losing to Dwivedi in 2017, he returned to the seat in 2022, strengthening the SP's standing in the district.
Kapilvastu: BJP's Shyamdhani Rahi retained the seat with 1,22,940 votes, while SP's Vijay Kumar received 92,001. Congress's Devendra Kumar Guddu and BSP's Kanhaiya Prasad also contested. The area, known as the land of Lord Buddha, is one of the district's most significant constituencies. The BJP had also performed well here in 2017.
Shohratgarh: Vinay Verma of Apna Dal (Sonelal) won as the NDA alliance candidate. Premchandra of the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, Congress's Chaudhary Ravindra Pratap and BSP's Radharaman Tripathi were the other key contenders. The seat's political history includes victories for several parties, with the SP's Lalmuni Singh winning in 2012 and Apna Dal (Sonelal)'s Amar Singh Chaudhary winning in 2017.
The 2022 outcomes confirmed that the BJP and its allies remained dominant in Siddharthnagar, while the SP's wins in Dumariyaganj and Itwa demonstrated its growing competitiveness.
