Shivraj Chouhan: Fertilizer Prices Stable, Farmer ID Ends Hoarding

In a relief announcement for India’s farming community, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan confirmed no increase in fertilizer prices despite global market turbulence. Speaking in Bhopal on Friday, he unveiled the ‘Farmer ID’ initiative to streamline distribution and stamp out black marketing.

The press conference came amid concerns over rising international commodity prices, yet Chouhan assured continuity: urea at Rs 266 per bag and DAP at Rs 1,350. ‘Subsidies cover every extra rupee, sparing farmers any burden,’ he declared.

A whopping Rs 41,000 crore supplemental allocation has been greenlit by the Union Cabinet, acting as a buffer against fluctuating world rates. This proactive step highlights New Delhi’s dedication to agricultural stability.

Misuse of subsidized fertilizers for non-farming purposes has long plagued the system. Enter the ‘Farmer ID’—a unified platform integrating land, crop, and personal data for targeted allocation.

This tech-driven approach promises balanced supply: ample for real farmers, zero tolerance for stockpiling or diversion. With 92.9 million IDs already issued, expansion to 13 crore farmers is underway.

Chouhan addressed challenges for leaseholders and tenants, pointing to a proven Madhya Pradesh-Haryana pilot where landowner affidavits enable access. Nationwide scaling is the next phase.

Geopolitics looms large, with supply chains strained by conflicts. Yet, under PM Modi’s stewardship, constant reviews guarantee steady fertilizer flow and export resilience.

Wrapping up, the minister reiterated: ‘Protecting farmers with right prices and inputs amid global storms is non-negotiable.’ This policy pivot reinforces India’s farmer-centric growth story.
