Meghalaya’s political circles are reeling from the untimely death of Shillong Lok Sabha MP Dr. Ricky A.J. Singkon, who tragically collapsed during a casual football game on Thursday evening. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in mourning, describing the late MP as a beacon of selfless service.
In an emotional X post, PM Modi wrote: ‘Saddened by the demise of Shillong’s MP Dr. Ricky A.J. Singkon. Meghalaya will forever cherish his unwavering dedication to its people. Condolences to his loved ones. Om Shanti.’ The Prime Minister’s words captured the essence of Singkon’s short but stellar career.
A first-time MP from the VPP, Singkon’s death came just months after his emphatic electoral triumph. He had crushed Congress veteran Vincent H. Pala with a margin exceeding 3.7 lakh votes in 2024, signaling a new era for the northeastern state.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing sequence: Singkon fell ill mid-game and was hurried to Mawiong CHC. Finding it understaffed, attendants shifted him to Jaiaw’s Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital. Doctors fought valiantly, but he succumbed around 8:42 PM.
The hospital soon became a hub of sorrow as CM Conrad Sangma, his deputy Preston Tinsong, VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, MLAs, and activists gathered to pay respects. Singkon’s rise from a local doctor to a parliamentary heavyweight was nothing short of meteoric.
His campaign focused on transparency, youth empowerment, and regional development, earning him fierce loyalty. Meghalaya’s youth saw in him a relatable leader who shunned dynasty politics. Now, as the state prepares for his last rites, questions arise about the by-election and VPP’s future.
Singkon leaves behind a wife, two children, and a void in Meghalaya’s representation. Political analysts note his death could reshape alliances ahead of state polls. Meanwhile, national leaders from across the spectrum have condoled, affirming his cross-party appeal.
