Shahabuddin demands UCC, madrasa reforms discussed in opposition coalition

In a pointed address at the India Block meeting, Maulana Shahabuddin urged opposition leaders to bring the Uniform Civil Code and madrasa reforms into the spotlight. He argued that these issues directly affect the legal and educational fabric of India’s Muslim minority.

While leaders such as Mallikarjun Kharge and Mamata Banerjee voiced their usual political narratives, Shahabuddin noted the silence on contentious matters like the implementation timeline of the UCC and recent court rulings on madrasa funding. He called for a consensus‑building approach that respects religious diversity while advancing national cohesion.

The cleric also echoed the central government’s stance on drug control, praising Amit Shah’s commitment to a drug‑free Punjab and urging similar initiatives in other states. He cited Islamic doctrine that forbids intoxicants, appealing to community leaders for a collective stand.

Shahabuddin concluded by urging the Samajwadi Party to nominate a Muslim representative for the upcoming Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh, citing the presence of seasoned Muslim politicians within the party’s ranks who could provide balanced representation.
