Shah May Use Punjab Tour to Bolster BJP Ahead of State Elections

Amit Shah’s planned visit to Punjab on October 20 is being closely watched for its political implications. While the primary agenda is to address the drug menace, many analysts believe the home minister will also use the trip to strengthen the Bharatiya Janata Party’s footing before the next assembly elections.

Ravneet Singh Bittu, a former union minister, publicised the schedule on X and framed Shah’s arrival as an opportunity for the BJP to reconnect with Punjabi voters. Bittu highlighted the deteriorating law‑and‑order situation and urged the public to back Shah’s anti‑drug drive.

The timing aligns with speculation that the Election Commission may soon dispatch a monitoring team to Punjab, a precursor to the election schedule. Shah’s presence could allow party leaders to gauge voter sentiment, coordinate grassroots campaigns, and showcase the central government’s firm stance on narcotics.

In addition to political maneuvering, Shah is expected to meet families of victims, such as the parents of anti‑drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, whose recent killing in Mansehra shocked the state. Previously, Shah condemned the Dirba suicide of a father under pressure and the Mansehra murder, asserting that these incidents expose serious cracks in Punjab’s security apparatus.

The Home Ministry has indicated it will demand a detailed response from the Punjab administration regarding the Dirba and Mansehra cases, reinforcing the narrative that the central government is holding the state accountable for law‑and‑order lapses.

As the visit approaches, both parties and opposition leaders are gearing up for a high‑stakes political contest, with the anti‑drug agenda likely to dominate public discourse in the run‑up to the polls.
