Security Operation Retrieves 800 kg Ammonium Nitrate from Nalhati Home
The Birbhum district police concluded a coordinated security operation on Tuesday night, securing a hidden stash of explosives at a house in Nalhati. The raid was prompted by a report of large quantities of blasting material stored in the home of a resident of Lakhanamara village, an area famed for its stone quarries.
Search teams uncovered a secret compartment in the rear of the house and seized 800 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, 12,400 gelatin sticks, 105 detonators and 36 detonating fuse coils. The haul is one of the biggest recovered in recent months.
Investigators are probing whether the chemicals were meant for legitimate quarrying purposes or for illicit acts of sabotage. The police are also pursuing the individual who leased the property, who is believed to have absconded shortly after the seizure.
