Scooty-Borne Thieves Nabbed by Delhi Police After CCTV Tracking

New Delhi, October 23: Delhi Police have arrested two men accused of a theft in the Wazirabad area. The suspects were apprehended in Uttarakhand after a painstaking tracking operation. Officers recovered gold and silver jewellery, cash and house-breaking implements in the course of the arrests.

Police said an FIR was lodged on October 10 after Sanjeev Bhaumik, a Wazirabad resident, reported that his house had been burgled. Unknown persons had allegedly taken gold and silver jewellery and cash. A probe was started soon after the case was registered.

A special team was set up in view of the gravity of the case. Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the crime scene and its neighbourhood. The footage revealed that two suspects had arrived on a white scooty. Police then mobilised local intelligence contacts and widened the CCTV-based search to several routes.

The team reviewed and analysed hundreds of cameras along the suspected paths. Through sustained effort, constant tracking and close examination of footage, they reached a house in Bhajanpura, Delhi. A local inquiry identified one of the suspects as Sameer alias Saddam. The probe further showed that the duo had departed from Delhi for Shivpuri in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, on the morning of October 14.

Based on technical inputs and local intelligence, police used technical surveillance to locate the suspects. Sameer alias Saddam was found and arrested in Shivpuri, Rishikesh, on October 15. He admitted during questioning that he had committed the crime together with Mujammil alias Monu, aged 26. Police then arrested Monu from Bhajanpura, Delhi, the same day, based on the information and location given by Sameer.

In the next phase, police recovered the stolen jewellery and Rs 42,670 in cash from the homes of both accused. Under continuous questioning, both men confessed to their involvement. They also disclosed that they had recently stolen jewellery from a house in the Hardev Nagar area.

Investigators were told that the stolen items were concealed at the accused's homes after each theft. The duo had also stolen a scooty, which they used to ride through lightly populated areas. This helped them scout for houses that could be targeted.

To dodge arrest and hide their identities, the accused replaced the real registration plate of the stolen scooty with a fake plate. Police are continuing their investigation and further action is in progress.
