SC Summons Sanjay Raut Despite Apology Affidavit

New Delhi, October 29: The Supreme Court has summoned Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut to appear in person on November 17, even though he has filed an affidavit tendering an unconditional apology to the Chief Justice of India and the apex court.

The development comes after a contempt notice was issued against Raut over his comments targeting the judiciary.

In his affidavit, Raut said he understood the significance of maintaining the dignity, freedom and authority of the Supreme Court. He maintained that he had never intended to disrespect the court or to weaken the standing of the judiciary.

Raut admitted that some of his statements were unverified, were made without adequate care, or could have created an unjust impression about the judiciary. He said he did not intend to harm the court's reputation, reduce its authority, cast doubt on the independence or fairness of any judge, or obstruct justice.

He further assured the court that he would exercise greater restraint and caution while speaking publicly about the judiciary and would verify any factual claim about the conduct of judges before making it.

The apology, however, is not part of the court's record. On Wednesday, no lawyer appeared on Raut's behalf. Taking note of this, the court directed him to appear personally on November 17.

On that date, the Supreme Court will take up the apology and decide how to proceed.
